Or if it is a \u201clucky number\u201d? A new study by SISSA, carried out in collaboration with the University of Trieste and the University of Saint Andrews, suggests an innovative method that could help answer such questions through physics, using some sort of \u201cquantum abacus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By combining theoretical and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/experimental+work\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">experimental work<\/a>, scientists were able to reproduce a quantum potential with <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/energy+levels\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">energy levels<\/a> corresponding to the first 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/prime+numbers\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">prime numbers<\/a> and the first 10 lucky numbers using holographic laser techniques. This result, published in <i>PNAS Nexus<\/i>, opens the door to obtaining potentials with finite sequences of integers as arbitrary quantum energies, and to addressing mathematical questions related to <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/number+theory\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">number theory<\/a> with quantum mechanical experiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery physical system is characterized by a certain set of energy levels, which basically make up its ID,\u201d explains Giuseppe Mussardo, <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/theoretical+physicist\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">theoretical physicist<\/a> at SISSA\u2014International School for Advanced Studies. \u201cIn this work, we have reversed this line of reasoning: is it possible\u2014starting from an arithmetic sequence, for example that of prime numbers\u2014to obtain a quantum system with those very numbers as energy levels?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you want to know whether a very large integer is a prime number or not?
