Like a hunk of Swiss cheese, our galaxy is full of these so-called superbubbles. The explosive supernova deaths of massive stars blow up these bubbles, and in the process, concentrate gas and dust\u2014the fuel for making <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/new+stars\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">new stars <\/a>\u2014on the bubbles\u2019 outer surfaces. These thick surfaces accordingly serve as rich sites for subsequent star and planet formation.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists\u2019 overall understanding of superbubbles, however, remains incomplete.
