This explosion of infections requires more treatment options to support overloaded hospitals and overworked medics as they restore people\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>It has been known for a long time that intubation of an infant with any <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/lung+condition\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lung condition<\/a>, or even an adult with severe COVID-19 using either ventilation or extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), comes with risks and <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/side+effects\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">side effects<\/a> that could cause permanent damage not limited to the lungs. However, hypoxia, which means <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/oxygen+deficiency\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">oxygen deficiency<\/a>, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/medical+emergency\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">medical emergency<\/a> that is a common complication of severe <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/lung+infections\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lung infections<\/a>.
