They produce some of the highest-energy radiation ever observed, and scientists have long puzzled over the physics that underlies the process powering their energetic emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a recent paper published in <i>Physical Review Letters<\/i>, a Dartmouth physics major and an assistant professor have proposed a new theory that explains how <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/magnetic+energy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">magnetic energy<\/a> can be very quickly released with explosive energy into charged particles in these <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/extreme+environments\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">extreme environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similar magnetic explosions also occur closer to home, setting off <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/solar+flares\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">solar flares<\/a> and the Northern Lights.
