If they can truly connect with sats back home, we could get closer to achieving autonomous moon travel. But eventually that won\u2019t be enough. To help direct humans on the lunar surface, we\u2019re going to need a fleet of satellites specifically around the moon. NASA calls its project LunaNet, and it\u2019s part of the <a class=\"\" href=https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/nasa-issued-the-plan-to-return-humans-to-the-moon-by-20-1845145450>Gateway space station<\/a>, which is the culmination of America\u2019s plan to return to the moon. It needs to be designed to play well with ESA technology and, eventually, will be the source of high-speed internet on the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis I launched <a class=\"\" href=https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/artemis-1-successfully-launches-nasa-back-to-the-moon-a-1849790531>back in November<\/a>, rounded the <a class=\"\" href=https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/artemis-i-passes-81-miles-above-moons-surface-before-he-1849812032>moon just 81 miles above the lunar surface<\/a> and touched down Earth-side in December. Artemis II, which will carry astronauts around the moon in a similar trajectory, is slated to launch in late 2024, <a class=\"\" href=https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit target=_blank rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to <a href=\"http:\/\/Space.com\">Space.com<\/a><\/a>.
