Building a protein starts with a string of amino acids\u2014think a myriad of Christmas lights on a string\u2014 which then fold into 3D structures (like rumpling them up for storage).<\/p>\n<p>DeepMind and Baker both made waves when they each developed algorithms to predict the structure of any protein based on their amino acid sequence. It was no simple endeavor; the predictions were mapped at the atomic level.<\/p>\n<p>Designing new proteins raises the complexity to another level. This year Baker\u2019s lab took a stab at it, with one effort <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2022\/03\/24\/this-algorithm-designs-proteins-from-scratch-to-accelerate-drug-discovery\/\">using good old screening<\/a> techniques and another relying on <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2022\/07\/26\/protein-designing-ai-opens-door-to-medicines-humans-couldnt-dream-up\/\">deep learning hallucinations<\/a>.
