{"id":153952,"date":"2022-12-30T20:23:24","date_gmt":"2022-12-31T02:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/new-minerals-discovered-in-massive-meteorite-may-reveal-clues-to-asteroid-formation"},"modified":"2022-12-30T20:23:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-31T02:23:24","slug":"new-minerals-discovered-in-massive-meteorite-may-reveal-clues-to-asteroid-formation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/new-minerals-discovered-in-massive-meteorite-may-reveal-clues-to-asteroid-formation","title":{"rendered":"New minerals discovered in massive meteorite may reveal clues to asteroid formation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/new-minerals-discovered-in-massive-meteorite-may-reveal-clues-to-asteroid-formation2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers has discovered at least two new minerals that have never before been seen on Earth in a 15 tonne meteorite found in Somalia \u2014 the ninth largest meteorite ever found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever you find a new mineral, it means that the actual geological conditions, the chemistry of the rock, was different than what\u2019s been found before,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ualberta.ca\/directory\/person\/herd\">Chris Herd<\/a>, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/earth-sciences\/index.html\">Department of Earth &amp; Atmospheric Sciences<\/a> and curator of the University of Alberta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/museums\/museum-collections\/meteorite-collection.html\">Meteorite Collection<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes this exciting: In this particular meteorite you have two officially described minerals that are new to science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two minerals found came from a single 70 gram slice that was sent to the U of A for classification, and there already appears to be a potential third mineral under consideration.
