It can be hard to tell \u2014 perhaps too hard, its creator OpenAI thinks, which is why it is working on a way to \u201cwatermark\u201d AI-generated content.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/scottaaronson.blog\/?p=6823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lecture<\/a> at the University of Austin, computer science professor Scott Aaronson, currently a guest researcher at OpenAI, revealed that OpenAI is developing a tool for \u201cstatistically watermarking the outputs of a text [AI system].\u201d Whenever a system \u2014 say, ChatGPT \u2014 generates text, the tool would embed an \u201cunnoticeable secret signal\u201d indicating where the text came from.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI engineer Hendrik Kirchner built a working prototype, Aaronson says, and the hope is to build it into future OpenAI-developed systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s proving tough to reign in systems like ChatGPT Did a human.
