According to GitHub, Copilot is \u201cpowered by <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/openai-codex\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Codex<\/a>, a generative pretrained AI model created by <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">OpenAI<\/a>\u201d and has been trained on \u201cnatural language text and source code from publicly available sources, including code in public repositories on GitHub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/joseph-saveri-law-firm-and-matthew-butterick-file-class-action-lawsuit-against-github-microsoft-and-openai-over-violations-of-open-source-licenses-arising-from-github-copilot-an-ai-based-product-301668255.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">class-action lawsuit<\/a> filed against GitHub Copilot, its parent company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Microsoft<\/a>, and OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/githubcopilotlitigation.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">claims open-source software piracy and violations of open-source licenses<\/a>.
