This is Neptune\u2019s largest moon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/science\/neptune-gallery\/amp\">Triton<\/a>, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/moons\/neptune-moons\/triton\/in-depth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">visited only once<\/a> by NASA\u2019s Voyager 2 in 1989. But are <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanohotspot.wordpress.com\/2020\/09\/01\/the-nitrogen-geysers-of-triton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Triton\u2019s geysers<\/a> the only characteristics that make it a good target for astrobiology and finding life beyond Earth?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTriton may be an \u2018ocean world\u2019, a moon that has a solid ice crust over a liquid water subsurface ocean,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.edu\/about\/staffpage\/cjhansen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Candice Hansen-Koharchek<\/a>, a planetary scientist who was a Voyager Imaging Team Assistant Experiment Representative during the Voyager missions. \u201cIf that is the case, and if we are able someday to reach that ocean and find life, that would extend the habitable zone to the Kuiper Belt, not just the inner solar system. That has profound implications, both in our solar system and at exoplanets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Due to its geysers, which Voyager 2 identified as dark streaks, Triton is only the third known planetary body in the Solar System to be volcanically active, aside from Earth and Jupiter\u2019s innermost Galilean moon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/science\/io-europa-juno\">Io<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s frigid and strange and orbits its home planet backward.
