The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/definition\/james-webb-space-telescope-jwst\/\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (JWST) has taken an image of a protostar \u2013 an object that is massive enough to become a star but hasn\u2019t yet begun the process of nuclear fusion \u2013 revealing details that have never been seen before.<\/p>\n<p>This protostar is in an area called the Taurus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2343259-jwst-has-taken-a-star-studded-new-image-of-the-pillars-of-creation\/\">star-forming region<\/a>, embedded within a dark cloud of dust and gas called L1527. It is only about 100,000 years old, putting it in the first stage of star formation, in which it is still slightly fluffy and lopsided.
