However, the Moon was formed <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.1602365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">around 4.5 billion years ago<\/a>, meaning that the current recession rate is a poor guide for the past.<\/p>\n<p>Along with our fellow researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uu.nl\/staff\/FJHilgen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Utrecht University<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Maria-Ovtcharova\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">University of Geneva<\/a>, we have been using a combination of techniques to try and gain information on our solar system\u2019s distant past.<\/p>\n<p>We recently discovered the perfect place to uncover the long-term history of our receding Moon. And it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2117146119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">not from studying the Moon itself, but from reading signals in ancient layers of rock on Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If we take the Moon\u2019s current rate of recession and project it back in time, we end up with a collision between the Earth and the Moon around 1.5 billion years ago.
