Deciphering how they work could bring tremendous benefits, from finding ways to treat brain diseases and neurological disorders to inspiring new forms of machine intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>But a critical starting point is coming up with a parts list. While everyone knows that brains are primarily made up of <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2021\/09\/12\/new-study-finds-a-single-neuron-is-a-surprisingly-complex-little-computer\/\">neurons<\/a>, there are a dazzling array of different types of these cells. That\u2019s not to mention the various kinds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fncel.2017.00024\/full\">glial cells<\/a> that make up the connective tissue of the brain and play a crucial supporting role.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the National Institutes of Health\u2019s BRAIN Initiative has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/news\/science-news\/2022\/nih-brain-initiative-launches-projects-to-develop-cell-atlases-and-molecular-tools-for-cell-access\">just announced $500 million<\/a> in funding over five years for an effort to characterize and map neuronal and other types of cells across the entire human brain.
