The device works like neurons in the brain to send signals to some cells and inhibit others in order to enhance and weaken the devices\u2019 memories.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Cunjiang Yu, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics and associate professor of biomedical engineering and of <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/materials+science\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">materials science<\/a> and engineering, the team designed the synaptic transistor to be integrated in robots or wearables and use <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/artificial+intelligence\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">artificial intelligence<\/a> to optimize functions. The details were published Sept. 29 in Nature Electronics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMirroring the human brain, robots and <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/wearable+devices\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">wearable devices<\/a> using the synaptic transistor can use its <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/artificial+neurons\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">artificial neurons<\/a> to \u2018learn\u2019 and adapt their behaviors,\u201d Yu said. \u201cFor example, if we burn our hand on a stove, it hurts, and we know to avoid touching it next time.
