On these timescales the blink of an eye\u2014at one 10th of a second\u2014is like an eternity.<\/p>\n<p>Now a team of researchers at UNSW Sydney has broken new ground in proving that \u2018spin qubits\u2019\u2014properties of electrons representing the basic units of information in quantum computers\u2014can hold information for up to two milliseconds. Known as \u2018coherence time\u2019, the duration of time that qubits can be manipulated in increasingly complicated calculations, the achievement is 100 times longer than previous benchmarks in the same <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/quantum+processor\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">quantum processor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLonger coherence time means you have more time over which your <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/quantum+information\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">quantum information<\/a> is stored\u2014which is exactly what you need when doing quantum operations,\u201d says Ph.D. student Ms Amanda Seedhouse, whose work in theoretical quantum computing contributed to the achievement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two milliseconds\u2014or two thousandths of a second\u2014is an extraordinarily long time in the world of quantum computing.
