{"id":146665,"date":"2022-09-19T09:02:19","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T14:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/the-perseverance-rover-is-finding-more-and-more-organic-matter-on-mars"},"modified":"2022-09-19T09:02:19","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T14:02:19","slug":"the-perseverance-rover-is-finding-more-and-more-organic-matter-on-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/the-perseverance-rover-is-finding-more-and-more-organic-matter-on-mars","title":{"rendered":"The Perseverance rover is finding more and more organic matter on Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/the-perseverance-rover-is-finding-more-and-more-organic-matter-on-mars2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Perseverance rover is exploring a long-dry river delta on Mars, and it has seen signs that indicate that the region is full of organics \u2013 molecules containing carbon that are widely considered to be the building blocks of life.<\/p>\n<p>The rover has taken measurements and samples in an area called Skinner Ridge made of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2324448-mars-looks-more-vivid-than-ever-in-new-photos-from-perseverance-rover\/\">layered sedimentary rocks<\/a>, some of which contain materials that were most likely transported from hundreds of kilometres away by running water billions of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the samples we\u2019re taking now in this more sedimentary area, we\u2019re of course right at the heart of what we wanted to do to start with,\u201d said NASA science lead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2335471-risk-for-orion-is-even-higher-than-for-sls-says-nasa-official\/\">Thomas Zurbuchen<\/a> during a press conference on 15 September.
