This improves road safety, including for autonomous driving.<\/p>\n<p>The expectations for autonomous driving are clear: \u201cCars have to travel safely not only at low speeds, but also in fast-moving traffic,\u201d says J\u00f6rg Schrepfer, the head of Driving Advanced Research Germany at Valeo. For example, when objects fall off a truck, the \u201cegocentric\u201d perspective of a car will often be unable to detect the hazardous debris in time. \u201cIn these cases, it will be difficult to execute smooth evasive action,\u201d says Schrepfer.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in the Providentia++ project have developed a system to transmit an additional view of the traffic situation into vehicles. \u201cUsing sensors on overhead sign bridges and masts, we have created a reliable, <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/real-time\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">real-time<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/digital+twin\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">digital twin<\/a> of the traffic situation on our test route that functions around the clock,\u201d says Prof. Alois Knoll, project lead manager TUM. \u201cWith this system, we can now complement the vehicle\u2019s view with an external perspective\u2014a bird\u2019s-eye view\u2014and incorporate the behavior of other road users into decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Providentia++ project, researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have worked with industry partners to develop a technology to complement the vehicle perspective based on onboard sensor input with a bird\u2019s-eye view of traffic conditions.
