The research is published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000201123\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Neurology<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Risk factors for stroke<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, causing damage to neuronal cells that in turn affects physiological functions in the body. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stroke.org.uk\/what-is-stroke\/types-of-stroke\" target=\"_blank\">different types<\/a> of strokes that can occur: ischemic \u2013 where a blockage prevents blood from reaching the brain, hemorrhagic \u2013 caused by a bleed in or around the brain and transient ischemic attacks (TIA) which are strokes that last for a short amount of time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-stroke.org\/assets\/downloads\/WSO_Global_Stroke_Fact_Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s estimated<\/a> that one in four people aged 25 and over will be afflicted by a stroke in their lifetime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study has identified an association between receiving an influenza vaccine and a reduced risk of stroke.
