The late Stephen Hawking believed there was a way to shed light on this strangest cosmic mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Hawking\u2019s final paper, published in the journal High-Energy Physics revisits one of his earlier (and no less mind-blowing) theories. The \u201cno-boundary proposal\u201d considers Einstein\u2019s suggestion that the pre-Big Bang universe was a singularity, an extremely dense and hot micro-speck of matter where the laws of physics didn\u2019t apply. Hawking speculated that time as we know it was nonexistent in this singularity, which had no beginning and no end\u2014infinite and spherical rather than finite and linear.
