{"id":145238,"date":"2022-08-31T04:11:05","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T09:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/08\/really-fast-ev-charging-korean-tech-charges-battery-in-60-sec"},"modified":"2022-08-31T04:11:05","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T09:11:05","slug":"really-fast-ev-charging-korean-tech-charges-battery-in-60-sec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/08\/really-fast-ev-charging-korean-tech-charges-battery-in-60-sec","title":{"rendered":"REALLY Fast EV Charging: Korean Tech Charges Battery in 60 sec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/really-fast-ev-charging-korean-tech-charges-battery-in-60-sec2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently did some things to advance EV charging tech that are way over my head to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2022\/04\/22\/the-mobility-revolution-hybrid-lithium-ion-battery-capable-of-recharging-within-a-minute\/\">a battery that could theoretically charge an electric car in only one minute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That might seem silly to people with a decent EV, but I recently found something that could eventually make EV charging so fast that even the owner of a Porsche Taycan might be shocked and amazed\u2014 and, as the owner of a Nissan LEAF, I\u2019m lucky to get a 50 kW charge rate, but that\u2019s only on the first charge. <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2021\/04\/23\/nissan-leaf-still-not-suitable-for-us-road-trips-even-with-rapidgate-software-update\/\">If I try to go anywhere on the highway, I quickly find that the second and third charges are a lot slower<\/a>. If I keep going, I can expect to get charging rates as low as 14 kW on the second or third session, which is more like DC slow charging than DC fast charging. When I get a chance to test and review better EVs, it seems like witchcraft when getting charging over 100 kW, and faster 250 and 350 kW charging sessions look like alien technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hybrid lithium-ion battery, which has a high energy density (285 Wh\/kg) and can be rapidly charged with a high-power density (22,600 W\/kg), is overcoming the limitations of the current energy storage system,\u201d Professor Jung-Goo Kang of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering said. \u201cIt will be a breakthrough.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently did some things to advance EV charging tech that are way over my head to make a battery that could theoretically charge an electric car in only one minute.
