Horizontally? Vertically? Left to right? Top to bottom? Would you place them randomly?<\/p>\n<p>It has been often been assumed, and taught in schools in Western countries, that the \u201ccorrect\u201d ordering of numbers is from left to right (1, 2, 3, 4\u2026) rather than right to left (10, 9, 8, 7\u2026). The ordering of numbers along a horizontal dimension is known as a \u201cmental number line\u201d and describes an important way we represent number and quantity in space.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show humans prefer to position <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/larger+numbers\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">larger numbers<\/a> to the right and smaller numbers to the left. People are usually <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2009-00781-003\">faster and more accurate<\/a> at comparing numbers when larger ones are to the right and smaller ones are to the left, and people with <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/brain+damage\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">brain damage<\/a> that disrupts their spatial processing also show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/417138a\">similar disruptions<\/a> in number processing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When asked to write the numbers from one to ten in a sequence, how do you order them?
