Technology: The heart is generally considered a \u201cpost-mitotic\u201d organ, or one without regenerative capacity. As we age and encounter chronic disease, senescent cells accumulate in the heart, just as they do in other tissues and organs. Ellison-Hughes\u2019 work has shown that cellular senescence may impact the efficacy of regenerative therapies, and that senolytics have the potential to rejuvenate the heart\u2019s capacity to regenerate. We caught up with the professor to learn more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/longevity.technology\/senescence-and-senotherapeutics-one-size-does-not-fit-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cellular senescence<\/a> is one of the nine <a href=\"https:\/\/longevity.technology\/hallmarks-of-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hallmarks of aging<\/a>. It occurs when our cells stop reproducing and enter a zombie state where they refuse to die \u2013 hanging around and causing problems throughout our bodies.
