Pelosi\u2019s trip coincided with US efforts to convince TSMC \u2014 the world\u2019s largest chip manufacturer, on which the US is heavily dependent \u2014 to establish a manufacturing base in the US and to stop making advanced chips for Chinese companies.<\/p>\n<p>US support for Taiwan has historically been based on Washington\u2019s opposition to communist rule in Beijing, and Taiwan\u2019s resistance to absorption by China. But in recent years, Taiwan\u2019s autonomy has become a vital geopolitical interest for the US because of the island\u2019s dominance of the semiconductor manufacturing market.<\/p>\n<p>Semiconductors \u2014 also known as computer chips or just chips \u2014 are integral to all the networked devices that have become embedded into our lives.
