{"id":142603,"date":"2022-07-21T12:42:20","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T17:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/surge-in-childhood-cancer-rates-in-sub-saharan-africa"},"modified":"2022-07-21T12:42:20","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T17:42:20","slug":"surge-in-childhood-cancer-rates-in-sub-saharan-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/surge-in-childhood-cancer-rates-in-sub-saharan-africa","title":{"rendered":"Surge in childhood cancer rates in sub-Saharan Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/surge-in-childhood-cancer-rates-in-sub-saharan-africa2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sub-Saharan Africa could soon account for half the world\u2019s cases of cancer in children unless the disease is prioritized through robust national plans, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/commissions\/cancer-in-sub-Saharan-Africa\">study<\/a> published in <i>Lancet Oncology<\/i> suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author, Wil Ngwa, from the Johns Hopkins Medicine, said that the high rate of people in Africa surviving infectious diseases could be a reason for surging cases of infection-related cancers such as Kaposi sarcoma, Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, and also embryonal cancers like retinoblastoma and nephroblastoma.<\/p>\n<p>Another<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6694\/13\/6\/1379\/htm\"> study<\/a>, published in the journal <i>Cancers<\/i>, found close to 1.7 million children under 15 years of age with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) worldwide, a risk factor for cancer in children, 91% of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
