While there are exceptions (like water and ice), it\u2019s difficult to find a material with zero thermal expansion.<\/p>\n<p>But new research from the University of New South Wales and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation has found a compound that doesn\u2019t thermally expand \u2013 at least, not between &minus;269\u00b0C and 1126\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers examined a substance made from scandium, aluminium, tungsten and oxygen (Sc<sub>1.5 <\/sub>Al<sub>0.5 <\/sub>W<sub>3 <\/sub>O<sub>12<\/sub>), bonded together in a crystalline structure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a basic rule of chemistry and physics: when you heat things up, they get bigger.
