In April of 2022, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and its U.S. Air Force partner <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/us-secret-missile-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\" data-id=\"embedded internal links\" data-type=\"link\" data-url=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/us-secret-missile-test\">announced<\/a> that they had completed a free flight test of the Lockheed Martin version of the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC).<\/p>\n<p>Then just last month, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/the-pentagon-awards-lockheed-martin-a-contract-for-a-crucial-system-for-energy-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\" data-id=\"embedded internal links\" data-type=\"link\" data-url=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/the-pentagon-awards-lockheed-martin-a-contract-for-a-crucial-system-for-energy-storage\">awarded<\/a> the company a contract to construct the nation\u2019s first megawatt-scale <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/a-new-type-of-battery-provides-low-cost-long-term-energy-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\" data-id=\"embedded internal links\" data-type=\"link\" data-url=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/a-new-type-of-battery-provides-low-cost-long-term-energy-storage\">long-duration energy storage system<\/a>. Under the direction of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center\u2019s (ERDC) Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), the new system, <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/capabilities\/energy\/federal-resilience.html?_ga=2.210761233.547858671.1655898004-1130695546.1655898004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">called \u201cGridStar Flow,\u201d<\/a> will be set up at Fort Carson, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>In the same time frame, General Motors and the firm <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/gm-and-lockheed-martin-electric-moon-rovers\" rel=\"dofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"embedded internal links\" data-type=\"link\" data-url=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/gm-and-lockheed-martin-electric-moon-rovers\">announced their plans<\/a> to produce a series of electric moon rovers for future commercial space missions. The companies said they plan aim to test the batteries developed by GM, in space later this year.
