While <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.illinois.edu\/battery-recycling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">90% of lead acid batteries<\/a> are recycled, experts estimate that only about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-56574779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5% of lithium-ion batteries<\/a> currently enter a recycling stream. Many more lurk in drawers or end up in the trash. That\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p><b>Why you shouldn\u2019t throw batteries in the trash<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2227-9717\/9\/1\/49\/htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lithium-ion batteries can cause fires<\/a> when exposed to heat, mechanical stress, or other waste materials. Once exposed, the elements contained in the batteries could leach into the environment and contaminate the soil and groundwater.
