In all, the virus carries 50 new mutations not seen in previous strains detected from 2018 to 2019, according to a new study published June 24 in the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-022-01907-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored noopener noreferrer\">Nature Medicine<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists usually don\u2019t expect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/53272-what-is-a-virus.html\">viruses<\/a> like monkeypox to gain more than one or two mutations each year, the study authors noted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The monkeypox virus has mutated at a far faster rate than would normally be expected and likely underwent a period of \u201caccelerated evolution,\u201d a new study suggests.
