If you look at the history of SETI, the original ideas proposed around 200 years ago were things like \u2018let\u2019s build some big fires on Earth\u2019; \u2018let\u2019s have some big mirrors that reflect sunlight to the Martians\u2019 or \u2018let\u2019s build some mile-long right-angled triangles to show aliens we know about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/pythagoras\">Pythagorean Theorem<\/a>,\u2019 and now we look back and say those guys were idiots,\u201d Werthimer said. \u201cSo, what\u2019s to say that 200 years from now people won\u2019t look back at us and ask why we didn\u2019t use tachyons or subspace communication? But you\u2019ve got to do what you know how to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the dispiriting likelihood that these signals have an Earthbound source, SETI astronomers are still fairly confident that we\u2019re not alone in the universe.
