With sources at near unimaginable distances, sometimes it\u2019s difficult for researchers to distinguish between objects such as stars, galaxies, quasars or supernovae.<\/p>\n<p>Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica e Ci\u00eancias do Espa\u00e7o\u2019s (IA) researchers Pedro Cunha and Andrew Humphrey tried to solve this classical problem by creating SHEEP, a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/machine-learning+algorithm\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">machine-learning algorithm<\/a> that determines the nature of astronomical sources. Andrew Humphrey (IA &amp; University of Porto, Portugal) comments: \u201cThe problem of classifying <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/celestial+objects\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">celestial objects<\/a> is very challenging, in terms of the numbers and the complexity of the universe, and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/artificial+intelligence\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">artificial intelligence<\/a> is a very promising tool for this type of task.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first author of the article, now published in the journal <i>Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics<\/i>, Pedro Cunha, a Ph.D. student at IA and in the Dept. of Physics and the University of Porto, says, \u201cThis work was born as a side project from my MSc thesis.
