As Earth passes between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/moon\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"the Moon\">the Moon<\/a> and the Sun, its shadow slips across the face of our satellite so only long, red wavelengths \u2013 sunlight refracted by Earth\u2019s atmosphere \u2013 can slip through, tinting the usually pale Moon blood-red.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when we see it from here, on our planet. But from space, the view is very different \u2013 and now we can see what that looks like, thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/asteroid\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"asteroid\">asteroid<\/a> probe Lucy, led by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), launched in October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-complete-guide-to-this-weekend-s-total-lunar-eclipse\">recent total lunar eclipse<\/a>, which could be seen on the night of 16 May across most of the Americas, Lucy was at a distance of around 100 million kilometers (65 million miles) from Earth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A total lunar eclipse is an incredible sight.
