Second, conventional heat spreading approaches generally require that the heat spreader and a heat sink be attached on top of the electronics device. Unfortunately, in many cases, most of the heat is generated underneath the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inceptivemind.com\/tag\/electronics\/\">electronic devices<\/a>, meaning that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inceptivemind.com\/new-silicon-nanowires-conduct-heat-150-better\/24725\/\">cooling mechanism<\/a> isn\u2019t where it is needed the most.<\/p>\n<p>And third, Gebrael explained, the heat spreaders can\u2019t be installed directly on the surface of the electronics. They require a layer of \u201cthermal interface material\u201d sandwiched between them to ensure good contact. However, due to its poor heat transfer characteristics, that middle layer also introduces a negative impact on thermal performance.<\/p>\n<p>Now, researchers have come up with a new solution to address all three of those problems. First, they used copper as a primary material, which is relatively inexpensive. They then made the copper coating that entirely \u201cengulfs\u201d the device, says Gebrael, \u201ccovering the top, the bottom, and the sides\u2026 a conformal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inceptivemind.com\/recycled-soot-coating-offers-high-solar-heat-conversion-efficiency\/24518\/\">coating<\/a> that covers all the exposed surfaces\u201d \u2013 so that no heat-producing regions are neglected.
