But is Gato truly intelligent <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>having artificial general intelligence <strong>\u2013 <\/strong> or is it just an AI model with a few extra tricks up its sleeve?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is artificial general intelligence (AGI)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Outside science fiction, AI is limited to niche tasks. It has seen plenty of success recently in solving a huge range of problems, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2306820-deepmind-has-made-software-writing-ai-that-rivals-average-human-coder\/\">writing software<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2284733-deepminds-ai-uncovers-structure-of-98-5-per-cent-of-human-proteins\/\">protein folding<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2319188-ai-suggests-how-to-make-beer-with-whatever-ingredients-you-have\/\">creating beer recipes<\/a>, but individual AI models have limited, specific abilities.
