Now, scientists are finding the volcano\u2019s effects also reached space.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing data from NASA\u2019s Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) mission and ESA\u2019s (the European Space Agency) Swarm satellites, scientists found that in the hours after the eruption, hurricane-speed winds and unusual electric currents formed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/ionosphere\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">ionosphere <\/a>\u2014Earth\u2019s electrified upper atmospheric layer at the edge of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/space\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe volcano created one of the largest disturbances in space we\u2019ve seen in the modern era,\u201d said Brian Harding, a physicist at University of California, Berkeley, and lead author on a new paper discussing the findings. \u201cIt is allowing us to test the poorly understood connection between the lower atmosphere and space.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha\u2019apai volcano erupted on Jan. 15, 2022, it sent atmospheric shock waves, sonic booms, and tsunami waves around the world.
