Up until now, it\u2019s been challenging to selectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/health-and-medicine\/breakthrough-in-mice-could-lead-to-new-therapy-for-hearing-loss\/\">regrow these sensory cells<\/a> that play an important part in transmitting sound through the outer and inner ear to the brain, but that might be about to change.<\/p>\n<p>In a study involving mice, scientists from Northwestern University have identified a single master gene that can program ear hair cells (known as cochlear hair cells) into becoming either outer or inner ear hair cells required for hearing. The breakthrough is reported in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-04668-3\">Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur finding gives us the first clear cell switch to make one type versus the other,\u201d said lead study author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/faculty-profiles\/az\/profile.html?xid=10824\">Jaime Garc\u00eda-A\u00f1overos, PhD<\/a>, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2022\/05\/new-tool-to-create-hearing-cells-lost-in-aging\/\">statement<\/a>. \u201cIt will provide a previously unavailable tool to make an inner or outer hair cell.
