The collision between the two continental plates is still happening today. India continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aaz8681\">creep north by 5cm (2in) a year<\/a>, causing Everest to grow by about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgs.org\/CMSPages\/GetFile.aspx?nodeguid=162760ce-8d64-42be-b354-5f1670ad7112&lang=en-GB\">4mm (0.16in) per year<\/a> (although other parts of the Himalayas are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/379505a0.epdf\">rising at around 10mm per year<\/a> [0.4in]).<\/p>\n<p>But understanding how and why Everest\u2019s height changes is more complex than just this.
