We did it right.\u201d These were some of the opening remarks from David Toback, leader of the Collider Detector at Fermilab, as he announced the results of a decadelong experiment to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abk1781\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">measure the mass of a particle called the W boson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I am a <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.ucdavis.edu\/directory\/faculty\/john-conway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">high energy particle physicist<\/a>, and I am part of the team of hundreds of scientists that built and ran the Collider Detector at Fermilab in Illinois \u2013 known as CDF.<\/p>\n<p>After trillions of collisions and years of data collection and number crunching, the CDF team found that the W boson has <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abk1781\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">slightly more mass than expected<\/a>. Though the discrepancy is tiny, the results, described in a paper published in Science on April 7, 2022, have <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/d41586-022-01014-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">electrified the particle physics world<\/a>. If the measurement is correct, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/2021-a-year-physicists-asked-what-lies-beyond-the-standard-model-173132\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">yet another strong signal<\/a> that there are missing pieces to the physics puzzle of how the universe works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cYou can do it quickly, you can do it cheaply, or you can do it right.
