Known mostly as a multi-tool to cut, snip, edit, or otherwise kneecap an existing gene, this version\u2014dubbed CRISPRa\u2014forcibly turns genes on. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abj4008\">Optimized by<\/a> scientists at Gladstone Institutes and UC San Francisco, the tool is counterbalanced by CRISPRi\u2014\u201ci\u201d for \u201cinterference,\u201d which, you guessed it, interferes with the gene\u2019s expression.<\/p>\n<p>Though previously used in immortal cells grown in labs, this is the first time these CRISPR tools are rejiggered for cells extracted from our bodies.
