Right now, the International Space Station crew consists of U.S. astronauts Raja Chari, Mark Vande Hei, Thomas Marshburn and Kayla Barron; Matthias Maurer, a German from the European Space Agency; and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov.<\/p>\n<p>Economic sanctions may affect the space programs on Earth, Mastracchio says, but the space-station crews never saw the impact of anything. \u201cThe programs themselves still get along,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was really just, we were friends before we went up to space, and you\u2019re working up there relying on each other and you continue to do that.\u201d Chamitoff says he wishes the world would take more notice of cooperative operations in space, which could be a better model for how to do things geopolitically. \u201cThe space station has been an amazing project that\u2019s brought 15 countries together for 30 years,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen things like this happen and there\u2019s these kind of tensions, you kind of wonder, \u2018Does anybody notice that we\u2019re working together and it\u2019s going great?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Full Story:<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>The world is on a knife\u2019s edge, but astronauts who\u2019ve worked on the International Space Station during times of crisis say they experienced nothing but friendship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Astronauts representing countries in direct armed conflict have never worked on the space station.
