EPFL physicist L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Forr\u00f3 and his team pave the way for the future of data storage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key was to get the technology to work at room temperature,\u201d explains L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Forr\u00f3, EPFL physicist. \u201cWe had already known that it was possible to rewrite magnetic spin using light, but you\u2019d have to cool the apparatus to\u2014180 degrees Kelvin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forr\u00f3, along with his colleagues B\u00e1lint N\u00e1fr\u00e1di and Endre Horv\u00e1th, succeeded at tuning one ferromagnet at room temperature with <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/visible+light\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">visible light<\/a>, a proof of concept that establishes the foundations of a new generation of hard drives that will be physically smaller, faster, and cheaper, requiring less energy compared to today\u2019s commercial hard drives.
