The idea is that \u2014 lacking a local repair shop \u2014 the icy bots can use found materials to rebuild themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Ice can be located all over the solar system, from the moon to the distant rings around Saturn. So researchers from the University of Pennsylvania are trying to figure out how to tap into that nearly unlimited resource for robotics.<\/p>\n<p>NASA wants to send the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/articles\/robot-dog-mars\">robot dog<\/a>, Spot, to space. The canine-bot can do many tricks \u2014 from herding sheep to helping the NYPD in a hostage situation \u2014 but it likely won\u2019t be able to repair itself.
