Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0294iXEPO4Y\">described<\/a> the metaverse similarly, calling it \u201can even more immersive and embodied internet.\u201d Picture this: you strap on a headset or pair of goggles, flick a switch, and boom\u2014you\u2019re still standing in your living room, but you\u2019re also walking through a 3D world as an avatar of yourself, and you can interact with other people who are doing the same thing from their living rooms.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto; width: 100%; aspect-ratio: 4\/3; object-fit: contain;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0294iXEPO4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope;\n   picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Being constantly within the internet doesn\u2019t sound all that appealing to me personally\u2014in fact, it sounds pretty terrible\u2014but the good news for those with a similar sentiment is that the \u201cfull vision\u201d of the metaverse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewball.vc\/all\/forwardtothemetaverseprimer\">according to Ball<\/a>, is still decades away, primarily because of the advances in computing power, networking, and hardware necessary to enable and support it.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to Raja Koduri, VP of Intel\u2019s accelerated computing systems and graphics group, powering the metaverse will require a 1,000-fold improvement on the computational infrastructure we have today. \u201cYou need to access to <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2013\/01\/30\/2-5-million-computers-give-petaflops-power-to-einsteinhome-other-projects\/\">petaflops<\/a> [one thousand teraflops] of computing in less than a millisecond, less than ten milliseconds for real-time uses,\u201d Koduri <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2101581\/intel-is-ready-to-talk-about-the-metaverse\/\">told <i>Quartz<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i> \u201cYour PCs, your phones, your edge networks, your cell stations that have some compute, and your cloud computing need to be kind of working in conjunction like an orchestra.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe will constantly be \u2018within\u2019 the internet, rather than have access to it, and within the billions of interconnected computers around us,\u201d Ball wrote in his Metaverse Primer.
