The company just has to pay administrative fees to secure the patent.<\/p>\n<p>In a <em>Politico<\/em> interview, Clearview founder Hoan Ton-That claimed this was the first facial recognition patent involving \u201clarge-scale internet data.\u201d The firm sells its tool to government clients (including law enforcement) hoping to accelerate searches.<\/p>\n<p>As you might imagine, there\u2019s a concern the USPTO is effectively blessing Clearview\u2019s technology and giving the company a chance to grow despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/clearview-ai-dhs-letter-225404725.html\">widespread objections<\/a> to its technology\u2019s very existence. Critics are concerned Clearview is building image databases without targets\u2019 knowledge or permission, and multiple governments (including Australia and the UK) believe the facial recognition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/clearview-ai-fined-17-million-for-breaching-uk-data-protection-laws-102806507.html\">violates data laws<\/a>. The tech could theoretically be used to stifle political dissent or, in private use, to stalk other people.
