Now scientists have developed a way to assess the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/environment\/article\/2009-05\/earthtalk-risks-nanotech\/\">health and environmental impact<\/a> of such nanoparticles: a tiny microresonator that can detect and measure individual particles smaller than a single virus.<\/p>\n<p>The microresonator is a lab-on-a-chip that harnesses the \u201cwhispering gallery\u201d concept that\u2019s displayed by buildings such as St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral in London. The cathedral\u2019s domed gallery can carry whispers easily across to the other side, but normal-volume voices end up garbled after bouncing around the dome multiple times.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, microresonators can bounce laser light many times around a circular \u201cwaveguide,\u201d such as a glass ring.
