Working with the Met Office, the UK\u2019s national weather service, DeepMind has developed a deep-learning tool called DGMR that can accurately predict the likelihood of rain in the next 90 minutes\u2014one of weather forecasting\u2019s toughest challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In a blind comparison with existing tools, several dozen experts judged DGMR\u2019s forecasts to be the best across a range of factors\u2014including its predictions of the location, extent, movement, and intensity of the rain\u201489% of the time. The results were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03854-z\">published<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03854-z\"> in a Nature paper<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<p>DeepMind\u2019s new tool<strong> <\/strong>is no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2020\/11\/30\/1012712\/deepmind-protein-folding-ai-solved-biology-science-drugs-disease\/\">AlphaFold, which cracked open a key problem in biology<\/a> that scientists had been struggling with for decades.
