Amongst their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/antarctica-bacteria-lives-off-air-alone-key-to-alien-life\">many<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/researchers-find-gut-bacteria-can-trigger-brain-lesions-that-lead-to-strokes\">roles<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-show-how-bacteria-use-micro-daggers-to-fend-off-amoebae-and-stay-alive\">life on Earth<\/a>, it turns out some of these microbes are also experts at purifying precious metals.<\/p>\n<p>An international team of researchers has figured out how one metal-gobbling bacterium, <em>Cupriavidus metallidurans<\/em>, manages to ingest toxic metallic compounds and still thrive, producing tiny gold nuggets as a side-effect.<\/p>\n<p>Just like many other elements, gold can move through what\u2019s known as a biogeochemical cycle \u2014 being dissolved, shifted around, and eventually re-concentrated in Earth\u2019s sediment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Circa 2018 Imagine waste turned into gold.
