That successful demonstration helps resolve the greatest uncertainty in the quest to build the world\u2019s first fusion power plant that can produce more power than it consumes, according to the project\u2019s leaders at MIT and startup company Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS).<\/p>\n<p>That advance paves the way, they say, for the long-sought creation of practical, inexpensive, carbon-free power plants that could make a major contribution to limiting the effects of global climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFusion in a lot of ways is the ultimate clean energy source,\u201d says Maria Zuber, MIT\u2019s vice president for research and E. A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics. \u201cThe amount of power that is available is really game-changing.\u201d The fuel used to create <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/fusion+energy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">fusion energy<\/a> comes from water, and \u201cthe Earth is full of water\u2014it\u2019s a nearly unlimited resource.
