Automated vehicles where riders can sit back, relax, and be delivered to their destinations without having to watch the road are continuously relegated to the \u201cnot-too-distant future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto; width: 100%; aspect-ratio: 4\/3; object-fit: contain;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kIrMaPTENB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope;\n   picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s not just debate on when this <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2021\/06\/01\/a-driverless-truck-took-a-load-of-watermelons-cross-country-42-faster-than-a-human-driver\/\">driverless future<\/a> will arrive, there\u2019s also a lack of consensus on how we\u2019ll get there, that is, which technologies are most efficient, safe, and scalable to take us from human-driven to computer-driven (Tesla is the <a href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/why-tesla-wont-use-lidar-57c325ae2ed5\">main outlier<\/a> in this debate). The big players are lidar, cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. Last week, one lidar maker showcased some new technology that it believes will tip the scales.<\/p>\n<p>California-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luminartech.com\/\">Luminar<\/a> has built a lidar it calls Iris not only has a longer range than existing systems, it\u2019s also more compact; gone are the days of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kIrMaPTENB0&t=3s\">big, bulky setup<\/a> that all but takes over the car.
