{"id":126191,"date":"2021-08-13T15:23:32","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T22:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/asteroid-impact-chances-increased"},"modified":"2021-08-13T15:23:32","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T22:23:32","slug":"asteroid-impact-chances-increased","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/asteroid-impact-chances-increased","title":{"rendered":"Asteroid impact chances increased"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/asteroid-impact-chances-increased2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A study by NASA has used precision-tracking data from the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft to more accurately plot the route of potentially hazardous asteroid Bennu from now until the year 2300.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The agency\u2019s new data, published this week in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0019103521002591?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\">Icarus<\/a>, has significantly reduced the uncertainties related to its future orbit, and improved scientists\u2019 ability to determine the total impact probability and predict the orbits of other asteroids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNASA\u2019s Planetary Defense mission is to find and monitor asteroids and comets that can come near Earth and may pose a hazard to our planet,\u201d said Kelly Fast, program manager for the Near-Earth Object Observations Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. \u201cWe carry out this endeavour through continuing astronomical surveys that collect data to discover previously unknown objects and refine our orbital models for them.
