However, once hijacked, the same kind of cell proliferation can be damaging, as happens in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cancer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"cancer\">cancer<\/a> tumors.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have now discovered a new resting phase for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuroepithelial_cell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neuroepithelial cells<\/a> \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"stem cells\">stem cells<\/a> of the central nervous system \u2014 which appears to put them in a kind of dormancy.
